We had a great time last night at the 2010 15th Annual MITX Interactive Awards and were proud to be a sponsor as well as a finalist in the Professional Services category. We had the opportunity to create this video spoof to be played in between awards presentations. We’d love to hear what you think!
The Arlington Youth Counseling Center (AYCC) is a licensed mental health agency committed to promoting and supporting the social-emotional well-being of Arlington’s youth and families.
AYCC was looking for a clean, more elegant logo. The new logo design needed to be friendly and reach out to the families of Arlington, especially to the children. We combined a simple, open typeface with a minimalistic roofline to represent shelter. The bolder “y” emphasizes “youth”. During the rebranding process, we urged AYCC to change their name from “consulting services” to “counseling services” in an effort to clarify their message.

Metropolis Creative’s US Pavement Services, Inc. Website Redesign for Spotlight Communications Selected as a 2010 MITX Interactive Awards Finalist
US Pavement Website Redesign for Spotlight Communications Recognized for Outstanding Achievement
Boston, MA (October 21, 2010) — Metropolis Creative today announced that its US Pavement website redesign for Spotlight Communications has been selected as a finalist in the Professional Services category for the 15th Annual MITX Interactive Awards. Held annually by the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange, the MITX Awards recognize excellence in the creation of web innovations designed, produced or developed in New England.
Since 1996 the MITX Awards has grown to the largest and most prestigious awards competition in the country for technology innovations and celebrates the best creative and technological accomplishments emerging from New England.
“The MITX Awards encompass all things creative and innovative in interactive marketing and technology, and this year saw an increasingly impressive group of forward-thinkers” said MITX president Kiki Mills. “We are proud to be the voice for the region’s digital community and we are thrilled to recognize some of the world’s most inspiring marketing and creative experts through the Awards.”
Metropolis worked closely with Spotlight Communications to deliver a cutting edge redesign of the US Pavement Services, Inc. website. “One of the biggest challenges was to showcase the many different services that US Pavement offers without overcrowding the website with information.”, said Michael Flint, president of Metropolis Creative. “The solution we came up with was to organize this content using some of the newest interactive web technologies that have the ability show and hide information. This enables the user to easily navigate to the information they want with fewer clicks.”
Metropolis Creative will be recognized with the other finalists in the category of Professional Services at a gala awards ceremony traditionally attended by over 1,000 of the region’s top interactive marketing and technology professionals. Winners will be announced at the ceremony in the Boston Marriott Copley Place on Thursday, November 18th at 6pm. Tickets can be purchased at www.mitxawards.org/interactive.
The 2010 MITX Awards are sponsored by: Bridgeline Digital, PricewaterhouseCoopers, DLA Piper, Pod Digital Design, Atom Group, Reebok, Technology Review, Boston.com, massAV, and Metropolis Creative.

Marathon Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine provides progressive and cost-effective fitness, wellness, athletic training, and outpatient rehabilitation through personalized care that emphasizes patient education and prevention of future injury.
Marathon’s new website design was just as much a rebranding as it was an improvement in the usability of their site. We carefully divided the content on their home page to speak to their different target audiences. Using the WordPress CMS, we designed and built a custom theme to fit their exact needs. Available classes and courses are shown on every page increasing usability.
Bryce Clark’s Nut-Freeks is a team that participated in the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network’s “Walk for Food Allergy: Moving Toward A Cure.” The team is headed by 7 year-old Bryce, who suffers from a severe allergy to tree nuts and hopes to raise money in order to increase awareness and to aid in research.
Bryce Clark’s logo sought to be fun and informative for use on t-shirts and other articles of clothing. We worked with Bryce himself to choose the best colors and fonts for his team logo. The team raised over $1700 for the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network!

Metropolis is proud to announce the launch of Lineplot Productions’ Silver Circle movie site. Silver Circle is a feature film by Lineplot Productions animation studio of Cambridge, MA. Currently in production, the small team is hoping to revolutionize how movies are conceived, created, and enjoyed.
Lineplot Productions was looking for a cool website design for their upcoming 3D animated film project Silver Circle. The site has pre-production photos, short clips of the film, and character bios. Metropolis developed three custom WordPress themes that allow the client to update virtually any part of the website themselves and the photo section integrates with their Flickr account. Social media integration includes two community blogs, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, RSS feeds and an “Agents” area where fans can sign up to become part of the Silver Circle project.
Instead of utilizing Flash, the website design incorporates jQuery and Javascript in order to allow for both cross browser and cross platform compatibility. All animation and interactive elements of the site are search-friendly and can be viewed on all devices, including iPhones and iPads.
Boston Region Entrepreneurship Week (BREW) celebrates entrepreneurs and all things related to conceiving, launching, and building new enterprises in and around Boston. Founded by Joe Caruso, BREW consists of a week long series of events, hosted by the community that provides resources and infrastructure to entrepreneurs. BREW week will take place this year from October 13-21 in Boston.
Metropolis designed a logo that would showcase Boston and the bright entrepreneurs that exist in the city. The sun/lightbulb in the logo represents the shining entrepreneurial spirit and the spark of new ideas. The casual style of the font and linework reach out to more than just the typical high-tech entrepreneurs found in this region.
“The team from Metropolis was among the first to step up and ask ‘how can we help’. That attitude is a great example of our region’s entrepreneurial spirit,” said Joe Caruso. “They took our vision for Boston Region Entrepreneurship Week and turned it into an eye-catching graphic we’re proud to have as our logo.”
In addition to the logo, Metropolis created a set of online badges for Boston entrepreneurs to use on their blogs and emails to help spread the word.

Charles River Web of Somerville, Massachusetts, and Metropolis Creative have been contracted to provide an overhaul of cartalk.com, the companion website to one of America’s most popular radio shows, Car Talk from National Public Radio. Hosted by brothers Tom and Ray Magliozzi, Car Talk is an hilarious, fast-paced and informative radio program focusing on the joys and woes of all things automotive. It has been a staple of National Public Radio for over two decades and is today enjoyed weekly by over four million listeners around the world. The cartalk.com website is similarly popular and supports an active community where forum participants discuss cars and car ownership. Nearly 7 million visitors come to the web site, annually.
Charles River Web has been charged with the task of remaking the site using a contemporary and facile content management system that will engage the community in new ways while helping to improve navigation and administration. Both parties have agreed to use the Drupal open source CMS which is today one of the premier tools of its kind.
According to Doug Berman, producer of Car Talk, “Car Talk chose Charles River Web because of their expertise in Drupal, thoroughness of preparation, and creative approach. We look forward to working with Charles River Web to help us modernize our site which today has ten year’s worth of content in numerous formats.”
Car Talk co-host Ray Magliozzi commented, “We can handle a clutch rebuild. We can fumble our way through a transmission rebuild. We can even figure out an engine rebuild given enough time… but a web site rebuild? We can’t even fake that!”
Tom, “Fortunately, we found Charles River Web literally around the corner from Car Talk Plaza. They work hard, they’re smart, talented, have great judgment and they’re totally cutting edge.”
“In short,” added Ray, “They’re everything we’re not.”
Charles River Web CEO, Seth Itzkan, stated, “My father turned me on to Car Talk nearly twenty years ago and I’ve been listening to it ever since. It is an honor to be associated with this American tradition. Their nuts-and-bolts wisdom and uproarious humor make Tom and Ray a brotherly Mark Twain of the modern era. Charles River Web looks forward to helping to modernize Car Talk’s web presence so that their following on the Internet can be even more fully engaged and empowered. We believe the Drupal open source content management system fits their needs perfectly and we are eager to begin the migration”.
Partnering with Charles River Web for user interface design is Metropolis Creative of the South End. According to Michael Flint, President of Metropolis Creative, “The Car Talk website is the perfect type of project for us. They have a strong brand, and are a lot of fun. We’re already working on some creative solutions to bringing their content and their community closer together.”
Charles River Web, incorporated in Massachusetts in 2007, are specialists in open source content management solutions including Drupal CMS integration.
