CPHD approaches its work from a Social Determinants of Health framework. Social determinants are the conditions in the environments in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. They include Economic Stability, Education, Neighborhood and Built Environment and Racism. These determinants result in disparities in health status, risk factors, or health outcomes that disproportionately impact vulnerable populations including people of color, non-English speakers, and immigrants.
The department’s main focus areas are population health; communicable disease prevention and control; emergency preparedness; environmental health; epidemiology; regulatory enforcement; and school health. The department also has the legal authority to make and enforce public health regulations within the city of Cambridge.
We hired Metropolis to work with us on a sorely-needed update of our website. They built a site with a fresh, clean look that's much easier to navigate. When the pandemic pulled the health department's attention away from the project midstream, Metropolis waited in the wings until we could focus again. We appreciated their patience and flexibility!
Detailed Service Directory
CPHD offers a variety of services to help residents lead a healthy and happy life. From healthy eating to vaccine information and more, we built a service directory system that highlights contact information, related resources, and other useful content to help point people in the right direction.
Helpful Resource Archive
We designed a resource archive that aims to help users easily find what they are looking for. This archive includes a series of individual category blocks, each containing a link to an overview page that includes a variety of related content, such as resource downloads, upcoming events, and more.
The Results
The Cambridge Public Health Department has implemented a new and efficient way to provide its residents with a wide range of information related to health. The website has been designed to provide an exceptional browsing experience across all devices, from desktops to mobile phones, thanks to its fluid code structure. The client can now manage the site on their own, edit pages, and perform other tasks using the WordPress platform.
